What is limewashed painting?
Limewashed painting is a type of paint application that uses a mixture of lime, water, and pigment to create a matte, chalky finish on surfaces such as brick, stucco, and plaster. It is a traditional painting technique that has been used for centuries and is popular for its natural and breathable qualities. The lime in the mixture reacts with carbon dioxide in the air to create a durable surface that is resistant to mold and mildew. It is often used for exteriors of buildings and is popular for its rustic, textured look.
How to create a limewashed finish when painting?
To create a limewashed finish when painting, follow these steps:
Clean the surface you want to paint to remove any dirt, dust, or debris.
Mix hydrated lime and water in a bucket, following the manufacturer's instructions. You can also add pigment to the mixture if you want to color the paint.
Apply the limewash to the surface using a brush, roller, or sprayer. You can dilute the mixture with water to adjust the consistency and opacity of the paint.
Work in small sections, using a criss-cross motion to apply the limewash. This will help to create a textured, uneven finish.
Allow the limewash to dry completely, which can take several hours or even a day or two depending on the humidity and temperature. The paint will lighten as it dries.
Once the paint is dry, you can lightly sand the surface to create a smoother finish if desired.
If you want a more opaque or uniform look, you can apply a second coat of limewash after the first coat has dried completely.
Remember that limewash is a breathable paint that will continue to age and patina over time. It is also important to wear protective gloves and eyewear when working with lime.

Limewashed painting is a type of style that can leave any wall with added uniqueness. It leaves a matte, chalky finish that adds chic. While it make look complicated, it is very user friendly (enough that I personally have done it in my home) and hopefully you can have a chance to try it out!
